History:
Olden Times
In the days before the coming of the adversary, the Homelands were a relatively peaceful, joyful gaggle of kingdoms. The Big Bad Wolf was the shadow that haunted the merry folks of these realms. His hunger preying upon the countryside, he stalked and tormented creatures large and small.
While of his victims are well known, such as the Three Little Pigs, and Little Red Riding Hood, countless other creatures large and small fell prey to his hunger.
Then ....one day the armies of the Adversary arrived. The Wolf grew enraged to find others preying upon the lands and creatures he saw as his proper possesions. His anger was further infalmed upon finding these advancing minions tasted of foul corrupted flesh, not even providing him a tasty meal.
The Wolf then set out upon a new goal, instead of haunting the good creatures of the land, he lived now only to make the lives of the Adversarys soldiers a nightmarish hell.
Beginning his war against the advancing masses, he took great pleasure in striking fear into the orcish hordes. Decimating entire legions at his will, he became legend even among the foulest, darkest forces of the devilish army of the Adversary.
The Wolf traveled far from his own lands, striking at the dark armies with no discernable pattern, striking fear into their hearts. The dark minions could not understand why such a powerful wicked beast would not join them, and become a great prince of the new dark kingdom. But each time a larger force was dispatched to deal with him, the wolf would take great pride in evading and terrorising it.
One day the Wolf encoutered a powerful Witch in the mountain territory. She was acting as gatekeeper of a portal to a far distant realm, one ruled by mundane technology. The wolf had heard tales of this place, the one land the Adversary did not seem to advance upon, and now any fable not yet enslaved was attempting to escape to this land.
The Wolf began to lead the occasional innocent fable he rescued from the orcs to this portal. Saving them from the dark shadow falling over the homelands. He made a perfect gatekeeper, as no spy of the adversary could trick him. The Wolf demanded to bite each fable asking entry to the portal, tasting to be sure they did not reek of the adversary'S corruption, to assure this new land remained beyond the adversary's sight.
It was in this way he first met Snow White. She and her sister Rose Red had been attempting to flee the homelands by locating one of these rumored portals to the mundane world. They had been captured, put into a chain gang with other prisoners and were being marched across the countryside. The Wolf fell upon their captors, ripping the orcs to shreds. While the other prisoners attempted to flee in stark terror....Snow boldly faced the giant Wolf. Though the Wolf would not admit it then, he fell in love with the dark haired woman at that meeting.
He offered to give them passage through the Witche's cave...if they allowed him to bite, to assure they were not spys. Snow and Rose were guided through the portal in the same manner that so many other fables had been saved by the Wolf, entering the mundane world around the mundy year 1400 A.D.
Two centuries later the adversary's attempts to capture him had grown too sophisticated and intent. The Wolf crossed over, destroying the portal behind him, the Witch herself having long ago abandoned it.
Around 1650 A.D. he was living in the mountains of Carpathia, preying on the inhabitants of the small villages, who placed the blame on a local count of some notariety the Wolf had befriended.
Snow White, accompanied by Feathertop, found the Wolf. She asked him to come join the new community of Fabletown being built in New Amsterdamn , across the seas in America. Within this new spacious land they could build a place in this mundy world where they could hide, at last in peace.
The Wolf had saved many fables by giving them passage through the portal, and most were willing to forgive his past transgressions. A great amnesty was being given, to forgive the sins of the old worlds and start anew. However some were still not willing, amnesty or no. The animal Fables had known the predations of the Wolf too initmately, they feared him too greatly. Therefore it would be necessary for him to pose as human , as he would be forever banned from the Farm.
Snow White had brought with her a lycanthropy stained knife. As he had asked to let him bite her to save her years before, she know asked him to do the same. Cut with the blade, the Wolf was enchanted with its magic, allowing him to take human form. Effectively making him a Were-human. A wolf able to take human form.
The Wolf accompanied Snow White to the new colony, and took the name Bigby Wolf as his human persona. Looking to make amends for his past sins by protecting this new community, the last outpost of free Fablekind.
Modern Times
Bigby has been the Sherrif of Fabletown since its inception. He ensures that no Fable break the charter, he keeps the attentions of the outside world far away, and of course, is always vigilant against any intrusion by the Adversary.
Taking time off to participate as a soldier in both world wars, he is one of the only Fables to take much interest in the mundy world. Bigby realises that they have made america their home, and its fate is of real concern to their survival. Even so ,most fables continue to try and go about their buisness - utterly ignoring mundy global affairs.
During the second world war he lead an elite commando unit "Dog Company" . His special skills gave him an edge in war most mundys could not hope to compete with. One one covert mission dog company was ordered behind enemy lines to a castle the nazis were occuping. Within its walls was some form of top secret super weapon project. Infultrating the castle, Bigby found the nazi weapon: Frankenstein. A hulk of a man whos existance threatened to give the Nazis power over death.
Taking half wolf ("werewolf) form, the two engaged in an epic , bloody battle with bigby emerging victorious.
Aside from his many war time adventures, the life of Fabletown sherrif has passed mostly unremarkably through the last few centuries. A largely peaceful and content community, publically Bigbys largest concerns have been keeping schemer Jack in line, and perpetually fining flycatcher for minor infractions of insect consumption in public.
In secret he runs a formidable spy network, employing 3 special Fables he has dubbed "Tourists" . These Tourists keep tabs on other Fables who have chosen to live around the world outside of Fabletown, making certain they abide by the charter. Bigby funds his covert operations with golden eggs from Gundrun, the Goose Who Laid The Golden Egg. Believed killed in the homelands, the Goose resides in secret in Fabletown. Known only to Bigby, she provides him with a limitless untracable source of funds. Bigby maintains the security of Fabletown with wolfish tenacity, doing the deeds that need doing, no matter how bloody. Most of his covert operations are unknown even to Snow White or King Cole.
Bigby lives ever vigilant of the Adversary's shadows....and ever trying to drown thoughs of the beautiful Snow White out of his heart.
